High banks of the Volga river are full of cavities, caves, and catacombs. The nearest entrance we know of is 2-3 miles downstream from us. These pictures are from there.
The catacombs are a result of mining for white stone, a beautiful and versatile construction material.
On your request Uncle Pasha can make up scary stories involving the underground. For a small extra fee he'll even act as a caveman.
Provided you pay your bills in full, leave the name and contact details of your next of kin, and sign a waiver freeing us of all and any liability before the the Public Notary of the City of Staritsa, we'll take you to the caves, supply you with flashlights, warm clothing, lots of string and whatever else you may need. We'll even initiate a search process after the passage of a period of time you specify before venturing in.
If you prefer, however, a gentler alternative, we'll recommend a qualified guide to look after you. Several are available in Staritsa. Cave experts include such honourable members of the local community as Dr. Khotulev or a distinguished scholar of the Staritsa history Professor Alexander Shitkov.
