Lyagushka  (= kicker or frog)

Born in the beginning of April of this year (2003) on a cold wet night and was kept in the kitchen in human company for the first few hour of her life, which seems to have made her imprinted on us humans. Follows us easily. Sleeps in human company (most horses will get up with people around).

May turn aggressive, especially if surrounded by a crowd. Kicks to kill. Her list of achievements has more broken ribs than I remember, and one serious commotio cerebri in November 2008. She is the prime suspect in Surprise's death >> precipitated by pelvic fracture likely caused by a strong kick from the back.

An illustration of her character. The photo was taken when she was a year or just over. Some oats spilled from the bag, and Lyagushka is trying to get at them. It is highly atypical of a horse to try to go into closed spaces. Anything that resembles a cave is a cause of genetically programmed fear for them because things that eat horses live in caves. Romashka >> and her daughters are a happy exception. In fact, Romashka's interest in things that make most horses run away was the number one reason why I bought her in 1999. Her daughters inherited her quiet yet active disposition.

Lyagushka responds to the gentlest pull of the reigns and the slightest shift of rider's weight. I use her to show that a bridle is not necessary to control a horse.
