I'm moving my Tver pages to
www.staritsa.info/tver.htm
Go there for anything between Moscow and St.
Petersburg or along the Golden Ring or anything else someone travelling
between the two capitals may conveivably end up. |
All trains
from Moscow to St. Petersburg travel though Tver, and they tend to leave
Moscow from the Leningradsky train station (Metro Komsomolskaya) in the
evening. Electric commuter trains, which are not as comfortable (noisy,
dirty, with loud vendors) run all the time. Or you can hop on the bus also
at the Leningradsky station. Moscow to Tver ticket will cost you from $3
(bus or commuter train) to $15 (1st class ticket, real train).
No need to
plan in advance unless you want to ride a specific train.
This
is the train station in Tver. Moscow is to your left, St. Petersburg to your
right.
The bus
station is 200 yards back towards Moscow - you can board the Staritsa or
Rzhev bus there. The last bus leaves about 6pm but for $30 or so a cab will
take you to Staritsa. See Tver to Staritsa

For an appropriate contribution to the car upkeep fund I'll
personally drive you to Staritsa.

A car trip from Moscow may take you through Klin (associated
with the name of Tchaikovsky), New Jerusalem (build when Russia thought of
itself as the center of Christian civilization), Volokolamsk and Rzhev (tank
battles of WW2).. Links are to Russian resources but you will still be
able to enjoy the pictures.

Ruins of a church near Guryevo, 40 miles from Staritsa.

This composition near Volokolamsk makes use of a German tank embedded into
Russian cement. Now, 20+ years after the construction of the monument,
cement is crumbling under the tank.

A fortification from the WW2 days north from Volokolamsk.
See elsewhere for the Moscow to St. Petersburg by car
proposal or its Moscow to Staritsa part.
