I have a confession to make. The point of this whole Tver page was to entice you to the city of Staritsa 65km (40 miles) west and then even more, to the deserted village of Dubrovki 7km (4 miles) down the Volga on the left side, where you will be offered to support the local economy in the amount of $25/day or more under the pretext of riding horses, exploring caves, rafting down the Volga, or feeding mosquitoes. You can get from Tver to Staritsa by bus or by car. The bus station is 200 yards south from the train station. If you came from Moscow, walk back. If you came from St. Petersburg, walk in the same direction your train was going. If in doubt ask. Russian for "Where are busses to Staritsa?" is "Gde avtobusy v Staritsu?" Don't panic if the first, second, etc. person does not know. Tver people have no idea where they live. Eventually you'll run into your fellow traveller who will point you to the bus station and help you buy tickets to the right bus. You can pretty much count on getting a ticket to Staritsa. Make sure you are not too late: in the winter the last bus leaves about 6pm. Or you can take a cab. Expect to pay 600R ($20) to Staritsa and 900R ($30) to the Village of Dubrovki. Make sure the driver takes you to Dubrovki and NOT to Dubrovino or any other similar-sounding place. If I'm here, which is normally the case, I will retrieve you from Tver in exchange for a $50 contribution to the car upkeep fund. A good meeting place is by the telephone center inside the train station.
That's the bus station in Staritsa. Note cabbies by the entrance to the hall. Being Staritsa cabbies they will not be there on weekends and at other times when people travel because hey they want to go places too. One of the way to get to Dubrovki is to walk towards the bridge, cross the bridge, go down to the Volga, and have me meet you there with horses, or a horse-drawn cart, or a sleigh, depending on the time of the year. More details on travelling the classing last mile are in Staritsa to Dubrovki. |
